A pupil-free day is a school staff day when students do not attend. Some education departments publish dates for the whole public-school system; others leave dates to each school. Start with your state's rules, then confirm your child's calendar.

Tasmania: check the year level and region
Tasmania's official term dates page, checked on 10 October 2026, now lists these 2027 professional-learning days. Students in the listed year levels and regions do not attend.

Term 3's published boundary is Monday 19 July, but that day is pupil-free for K–10. Those students resume on Tuesday 20 July. Confirm your school's attendance and moderation dates before booking care; the October dates apply only to their named region.

Count from the student date, not the teacher date
A term calendar may show when teachers return before it shows when students return. Development days already covered by the later student start should not be added again. This matters in NSW's January and February blocks and the ACT's separate starts for new and continuing students.
In WA, three development days fall in the Christmas/New Year break. In Queensland's published 2027 list, five dates fall in existing student holidays, as four of the five 2026 QLD dates did. A development day does not always mean an extra day of care beyond a holiday booking.
Confirm school attendance and care separately
Check each child's school newsletter, website or parent app. Ask the office if a day is missing or if two calendars disagree, then ask your care service whether it opens that day and requires a separate booking.
Pupil-free days do not themselves create public holidays. Use the public-holiday calendar for those dates and add your school's confirmed days to a term planner.

Are pupil-free, student-free and curriculum days the same thing?
They are common names for days when students do not attend while school staff work. The exact purpose and scheduling rules depend on the school system.
Does every state publish one statewide pupil-free calendar?
No. NSW, Queensland and the ACT publish dates, with conditions explained in their guides. Tasmania publishes dates with year-level and regional limits. Victoria fixes the first day of Term 1; other dates there, and dates in SA and WA, require a school calendar.
How many pupil-free days will my child have in 2027?
Use your school's confirmed attendance calendar. Department allowances, days during school holidays and local variations mean a statewide count alone may not tell you how many extra care days you need.
