The short answer

Every year holds 52 whole weeks, because 52 × 7 is 364 days. A common year runs 365 days and a leap year 366, so there is always a spare day or two left over — which is the same as saying a year is 26 fortnights plus a remainder.

2026 has 365 days: 52 weeks plus 1 day, or 26 fortnights plus the same 1 day. That leftover falls on a Thursday, so Thursday comes around 53 times while every other weekday comes around 52 times.

The year also holds 52 full Saturday–Sunday weekends and 261 Monday-to-Friday days. Once each state deducts its own public holidays, the working-day count lands between 250 and 253 days depending on where you work.

For payroll, the 2026–27 financial year runs 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 — 365 days. A weekly pay run that pays on a Wednesday has 53 pay days that year, and a fortnightly run whose first pay day of the year falls on 1 July 2026 has 27. Every other cycle gets the usual 52 or 26.

A weekend only counts when both its Saturday and Sunday fall inside the year, so a year that ends on a Saturday has one fewer full weekend than it has Saturdays.

Working days are the Monday-to-Friday days in the year minus that state's full-day statewide public holidays, which is why the totals differ across the country. For a specific date range, use the working days calculator.

Public holiday dates for 2027 and 2028 are not fully gazetted yet, so those totals include estimated dates and may change.

Financial year pay periods

Every other pay cycle gets 52 weekly pays or 26 fortnightly pays. The arithmetic is the same leftover day as the calendar year: 365 is 52 × 7 plus one, so one weekday comes around an extra time between 1 July and 30 June. A financial year with 366 days — one that contains a 29 February — leaves two spare days, and two weekdays gain a pay.

In a 365-day financial year, only the weekday of 1 July occurs 53 times. In a 366-day financial year, both the weekdays of 1 July and 2 July occur 53 times. So a leap financial year that starts on Sunday also gives Monday 53 weekly pay dates, and a fortnightly cycle starting on Monday 2 July has 27 payments. These counts assume payments stay at regular intervals; use the actual payment dates if payroll moves a pay day.

If your weekly or fortnightly payment stays the same, an extra pay date increases the total income received in that financial year. An annual salary's payment arrangements depend on your employment agreement and payroll calculation; an extra pay date does not automatically reduce each payment. The standard withholding tables assume 52 weekly or 26 fortnightly pays, so the extra payment can leave too little tax withheld. Check the ATO guidance for 53 weekly or 27 fortnightly pays and confirm your payment and deduction arrangements with payroll.

Hours per week and across pay periods

A standard full-time week in Australia is 38 ordinary hours, which is 76 hours a fortnight — the familiar 76-hour fortnight roster.

The payment totals assume each weekly payment covers 38 ordinary hours and each fortnightly payment covers 76. Those pay periods can cross the financial-year boundary: 53 weeks span 371 days, and 27 fortnights span 378 days. For annual roster hours, count the roster dates within the chosen year. Hours actually worked also depend on leave, public holidays and breaks.

Frequently asked questions

How many weeks are in a year?

Fifty-two, plus a remainder. 2026 has 365 days, and 52 weeks accounts for 364 of them, leaving 1 day over. A common year leaves one spare day and a leap year leaves two, so no calendar year divides evenly into whole weeks.

How many fortnights are in a year?

26 full fortnights, with 1 day left over in 2026. Twenty-six fortnights is 364 days, so a 365-day year runs slightly longer than 26 complete pay fortnights — which is what eventually produces a 27-pay year.

How many weekends are in a year?

2026 has 52 full Saturday–Sunday weekends, from 52 Saturdays and 52 Sundays. A weekend only counts when both its Saturday and Sunday fall inside the year, so a year that ends on a Saturday has one fewer full weekend than it has Saturdays.

How many working days are in a year in Australia?

2026 has 261 Monday-to-Friday days before public holidays. After each state deducts its own full-day statewide public holidays, the working-day total ranges from 250 to 253 across the states and territories.

Why do some years have 53 weekly pays?

Because 365 days is 52 weeks plus one extra day (two in a leap year), one weekday occurs 53 times in each year — two of them when the year runs to 366 days. A weekly pay run that pays on such a weekday lands 53 times. In the 2026–27 financial year that weekday is Wednesday; every other pay day gets 52 pays.

How do I know if I will be paid 27 fortnights this financial year?

Look at your first pay day on or after 1 July. For a regular fortnightly cycle running throughout 2026–27, a first pay day of 1 July 2026 produces 27 fortnightly pays; other cycles give the usual 26. If the amount per payment stays the same, that extra payment increases the income received in the financial year. Confirm your agreed pay calculation with payroll and check the ATO's guidance on extra withholding for 27-pay years.

How many hours is a 38-hour week over a year?

A 38-hour week is 76 hours a fortnight and 1976 ordinary hours across 52 complete weeks. For annual roster hours, count the roster dates within the chosen year. If each payment covers a complete 38-hour week or 76-hour fortnight, 53 weekly payments represent 2014 hours and 27 fortnightly payments represent 2052 hours. Those payments cover periods that cross the financial-year boundary.
