Frequently asked questions
Which states have daylight saving?
New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory observe daylight saving. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not, so their clocks stay on standard time all year.
What time do the clocks change?
Daylight saving starts on the first Sunday in October at 2:00am, when the clocks go forward to 3:00am. It ends on the first Sunday in April at 3:00am, when the clocks go back to 2:00am. The change happens at the same local time in every state that observes it.
Why do Queensland and Western Australia not have daylight saving?
Both put it to a referendum and both voted no — Queensland in 1992 and Western Australia in 2009. Each state page carries the result and links the government source it comes from. The Northern Territory does not observe daylight saving either.
Do phones and computers update the time automatically?
Yes. A phone, computer or smart speaker set to update its time zone automatically changes on its own overnight, so there is nothing to do. Manual wall clocks, ovens, microwaves and many car dashboards do not, so those need changing by hand.
How do I remember which way the clocks go?
Spring forward, fall back. The clocks go forward an hour in spring, at the October changeover, and back an hour in autumn, at the April changeover. You lose an hour of sleep in October and gain it back in April.
