Public Holidays 2027 Australia: State-by-State Guide
Full 2027 public holiday guide for Australia. See national dates, state-specific holidays, weekend substitutions, and the key differences between NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA, TAS, NT and ACT.

If you're already planning around leave, payroll, school terms, or travel, the 2027 public holiday calendar matters now. Australia shares the national dates, but the real planning differences still happen at the state level.
National holiday dates in 2027
- New Year's Day: Friday 1 January 2027
- Australia Day: Tuesday 26 January 2027
- Good Friday: Friday 26 March 2027
- Easter Monday: Monday 29 March 2027
- Anzac Day: Sunday 25 April 2027
- Christmas Day: Saturday 25 December 2027
- Boxing Day: Sunday 26 December 2027
The big twist in 2027 is the calendar shape. Christmas and Boxing Day both fall on the weekend, which creates substitute public holidays on Monday 27 December and Tuesday 28 December in most states and territories. That's a very strong end-of-year setup for long breaks.
The biggest state differences in 2027
- NSW, ACT, QLD, NT and WA get an additional public holiday on Monday 26 April because Anzac Day falls on a Sunday.
- Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania do not get the same Anzac Day replacement in the same way, so the practical break is shorter there.
- Queensland gets the Brisbane Ekka holiday on Wednesday 11 August 2027 for the Brisbane area only.
- Victoria still has the Friday before the AFL Grand Final as a public holiday, but the exact 2027 date is still subject to the AFL schedule.
- WA keeps the King's Birthday in late September rather than June, which changes the second-half long weekend pattern.
- South Australia and the NT also have part-day Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve public holidays, which matters for payroll and staffing.
The best planning windows
Easter runs from Friday 26 March to Monday 29 March, giving everyone a built-in four-day break. That will be one of the highest-search periods of the year and one of the best leave-stretch opportunities too.
The Christmas period is even stronger. Because Monday 27 December and Tuesday 28 December become additional public holidays, many Australians will only need a handful of leave days to create a long summer shutdown.
Why this matters now
For workers and employers, 2027 isn't just a list of dates. It affects payroll cycles, staffing levels, project deadlines, and how many actual working days sit inside each quarter. If you're building rosters or planning leave, don't assume another state follows the same pattern.
Use the Public Holidays pages to compare states, check Long Weekends for the best break opportunities, and keep an eye on Victoria in particular for the final AFL Grand Final Eve date once it's confirmed.
