Why Easter moves every year
Easter is set by the moon, not the calendar. Easter Sunday is the Sunday after the first full moon on or after the March equinox, which is why it drifts anywhere between 22 March and 25 April.
2027 sits near the early end of that window, so the break lands in the last week of March. That matters if you are booking around school holidays or a quarter-end at work, because an early Easter pulls both closer together than a mid-April one does.

The holiday weekend itself is fixed. The only lever is the working week on either side of it, and both weeks cost the same four days of leave for the same ten days off.

Easter is one of the busiest weekends of the Australian year on the roads and in the air. Leaving on the Thursday evening or the Saturday, rather than Good Friday morning, keeps you out of the worst of it.

Why is Easter so early in 2027?
It is eight days earlier than 2026. Easter Sunday was 5 April in 2026 and is 28 March in 2027, because the full moon that sets the date arrives earlier. In 2028 it swings back to 16 April.
Is Easter Saturday a public holiday everywhere in Australia?
No. Six of the eight states and territories gazette Saturday 27 March 2027. Western Australia and Tasmania do not, so it is an ordinary Saturday for workers there.
Does Tasmania get Easter Tuesday off?
Some Tasmanians do. Easter Tuesday on 30 March 2027 is a restricted holiday that covers parts of the state public service, so most private-sector staff work as normal.
