Easter 2028 runs from Good Friday 14 April to Easter Monday 17 April, a four-day weekend in every state. See the state split and why the date keeps moving.
Easter 2028 falls in mid-April, later than the past few years. Good Friday is Friday 14 April 2028 and Easter Monday is Monday 17 April, so the break runs four days without touching your leave. Which of the two days in between you get off depends on your state.
Which days your state gets off
Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays in every state that has published 2028 dates. Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday are holidays in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and the ACT, and NSW's estimated list follows the same pattern, which matters if you're rostered on over the weekend.
Tasmania is the exception. It observes neither Easter Saturday nor Easter Sunday, but it does add a restricted Easter Tuesday on 18 April 2028 for state public sector staff and some other workers. Your state's page under Easter public holidays lists the days it gazettes.
Why the date of Easter moves
Easter follows the moon, not the month. Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, the church's fixed date for the equinox, under a formula settled in the 4th century.
That's a five-week window. Easter Sunday can land anywhere between 22 March and 25 April, which is why the break jumped from Good Friday 3 April in 2026, back to 26 March in 2027, out to 14 April in 2028, then back again to 30 March in 2029.
Turn the four days into ten
Four leave days do it, either side. Book Monday 10 to Thursday 13 April and you're away from Saturday 8 April to Monday 17 April. Book Tuesday 18 to Friday 21 April instead and the break runs Friday 14 April to Sunday 23 April.
The second option has a bonus. Anzac Day 2028 is Tuesday 25 April, so adding Monday 24 April runs the break all the way to the 25th: twelve days off for five leave days.
