Ekka Holiday 2026: Brisbane Show Day Date, Who Gets It Off, and Leave Ideas

The Brisbane Ekka public holiday in 2026 falls on Wednesday 12 August. Find out who gets it, how it differs from other QLD show holidays, and how to turn it into a longer break.

Brisbane Ekka show scene

The Brisbane Ekka public holiday in 2026 falls on Wednesday 12 August. Officially it's the Royal Queensland Show holiday, but almost everyone still calls it the Ekka holiday.

Who actually gets the day off?

Not all of Queensland. The Brisbane Ekka holiday applies to the City of Brisbane. Other parts of Queensland get their own local show holidays on different dates, which is why this public holiday causes so much confusion.

If you work in Brisbane, it's a genuine mid-week public holiday. If you work elsewhere in Queensland, check your local show holiday instead of assuming the Brisbane date applies to you.

Why the Ekka holiday is useful for leave planning

Mid-week public holidays are some of the best leave opportunities on the calendar. A Wednesday holiday can be turned into:

  • 5 days off by taking Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
  • 3 days off with a simpler Tuesday-to-Thursday approach if your workplace is flexible

It doesn't create a natural long weekend on its own, but it can still be a very efficient leave window if you want a short city break or a quieter week away.

Ekka vs other Queensland show holidays

The Ekka is the most searched Queensland show holiday, but it isn't the only one. Townsville, Cairns, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Toowoomba and many other regions have their own appointed show holidays. That's why statewide holiday planning in Queensland is more fragmented than almost anywhere else in Australia.

If you're in Brisbane, use the Queensland Calendar and Leave Planner to model the week around Wednesday 12 August. If you're outside Brisbane, look up your local district show holiday before booking anything.
